New Armory is incoming

Filed under: Uncategorized — WoWProgress: main page @ 6:15 am
Blizzard showed us the new Armory by putting it online for a short period of time recently. MMO-Champion posted some details about Character Activity Feed:
Each character's activity feed shows the most recent in-game actions of the character that can be recorded by the Armory. These include achievements, boss kills, item acquisitions, and more. Character feeds can be customized using our customization tool, then exported as RSS feeds to your RSS reader of choice.

Probably this new Armory will be online in January 2010.
I'm excited about it as with these new features we can make our tracking much better. What's important:

1. Individual boss kills will be shown: we will be able to track boss kills (with current Armory we can't make it reliable enough).

2. Item acquisitions feeds. If it will work as we expect, we will know items acquired by character and that means we will be able to create reliable 10-man only Rankings by filtering out characters with 25-man items aquired. Guilds that maintain a set of 10-man only characters in their roster will be included into the rating and it will be possible to have both 10-man only and 25-man raids inside the same guild.

Some of my wishes:

1. Would be good if we could know Raid ID of boss kills. This way we could include Guild Alliances in the rating.

2. We could create some services for PUGs if there would be all boss kills (not just first kills by the character) with Raid ID included.

3. I hope support for client-side HTTP caching will be improved. There is now ETag-based HTTP caching which is okay but currently it doesn't work well as these current ETags aren't persistent. They are changing probably depending on server host (which is randomly chosen). And if requested, we have to download the same character pages several times even if they weren't changed.
With RSS, HTTP caching can be made easily with timestamp of latest feed item.

WoW Shadow Priest Arena Spell Rotation

Filed under: Featured Articles, priest, rotation, shadow, shadow-priest — Kearo @ 4:33 pm

Shadow Priests are pretty commonplace in Arena now. That being said, it’s imperative that you have a strategy in place if you want to win. That being said, you need a great rotation to add to your strategy. That being said, you need a proper rotation or your rotation is going to be bad. That being said, let’s look at the proper Shadow Priest Rotation for Arena today, so you’re not left in the dust. That being said. That being said. That being said. That being said……That being said.Without further delay ladies and gentlemen, I give to you the best Arena Shadow Priest Spell Rotation!

  • Mind Blast – This starts the burst going. Hit them with this first so you can start the cooldown and have it up faster.
  • Shadow Word: Pain – You’ve gotta get the DoT up as fast as possible, so it has the opportunity to do the most damage throughout the fight.
  • Mind Flay - This is more of a filler than anything.
  • Vampiric Touch – Now we’re getting to about 90-91% left on mana. Vampiric Touch will start the regen so that goes down slower.
  • If Shadow Word: Pain is off, renew it. This is your most efficient damage spell. Gotta keep that up at all times.
  • Mind Blast – Cooldown should be up. Nuke em with it.
  • Shadow Word: Death – As a finisher. If they’re not going to die from it (or very close) maybe save this until you can get them down a bit.

Thanks for viewing the WoW Shadow Priest Arena Spell Rotation! Kearo out!

    How WoW Calculates Arena Points

Filed under: Barrens Chat, arena — Kearo @ 2:26 pm

Hey WoW Arena fans. There have been a lot of questions and inquiries as to how World of Warcraft calculates Arena points for your team and decides your ranking. Well, today I’m going to get a little mathematical on you and break down exactly how your Arena points are calculated. WARNING: Nerdy Math Ahead.

The Arena Rating system is loosely based upon systems widely known for calculating records and scores for the game Chess. This system takes the overall ratings of two opponents, and calculates their chances of winning based upon the performance on the two players in previous matches. Then, the difference between the two player’s scores is applied to the max number of points you can get per match. This system guarantees that honest averages are taken and no one team can boost in ranking without playing a great number of matches. This prevents inaccurate data. (Told you it was involved).

    Match Rating Calculator:

    Team 1: Bashful Boomkin Brigade

    - Score: 1500 points

    Team 2: Furry Fury Warriors

    - Score: 1580 points

    Bashful Boomkin Brigade’s Chance of Winning: 1 / (1+10(1580 – 1500)/400) = 0.38686
    Furry Fury Warriors Chance of Winning: 1 / (1+10(1500 – 1580)/400) = 0.61314

If Bashful Boomkin Brigade unleashed the smackdown and won:

    Bashful Boomkin Brigade’s New Score: 1500 + 32*(1 – 0.38686) = 1500 + 19.62 = 1519.62
    Furry Fury Warrior’s New Score: 1580 + 32*(0 – 0.61314) = 1580 + (-19.62) = 1560.38

If Furry Fury Warriors clawed and scratched their way to victory:

    Bashful Boomkin Brigade’s New Score: 1500 + 32*(0 – 0.38686) = 1500 + (-12.38) = 1487.62
    Furry Fury Warriors’s New Score: 1580 + 32*(1 – 0.61314) = 1580 + 12.38 = 1592.38

The Maximum amount of points you can win or lose is 32. Therefore, if you play a team with exactly the same rating as you and lose, you’ll lose 16 points. This is adjusted as the ratings of teams you play are lowered and lifted. Thanks guys, see you around in World of Warcraft!

      FAQ, reminder

Filed under: Uncategorized — WoWProgress: main page @ 4:14 am
Just wanted to quote couple of questions from FAQ regarding updating progress and rankings.

Our guild has been updated but there is no new achievements.

Make sure that Armory info was updated for most of the characters. The Armory doesn't update while character is online.
Also note: sometimes there could be delays in Armory character achievement info, wait 1-2 days!

We killed boss faster than another guild did it, why the other guild ranked higher?

You killed the boss in the same day (or week for bosses ranked by lockout) which means you got the same amount of points.
Ranking by points means your position depends on your points, not kill time. Previous tier points will be used for sorting in this case.

      Tier10 ranking is online

Filed under: Uncategorized — WoWProgress: main page @ 1:24 am
      Icecrown ranking is online.
Current rules (just checking how it works - might be changed in future!):

      - all bosses will be counted, though Lich King will grant much greater score
      - limited attempt bosses will be counted by lockout

I see some guilds already done in 10man - please update your progress as soon as the Armory is up.
