Cataclysm Beta: Guild vendor armor, pets, mounts and more

See that dark phoenix pictured above? Want one for your very own? Wondering where to get it? Wonder no more -- with the latest patch drop on the Cataclysm beta servers, this mount is listed as a guild reward that you may purchase from the guild reward vendor located in the capital city of your respective faction. On top of the gorgeous dark phoenix, plenty of other amazing items have been added to the vendor. Recipes, pets, a ground mount that is unique to your faction -- and for those wondering where we'd get our level 85 heirlooms from, they're on the vendor, as well.

Take a look at the gallery below for a peek at what the guild vendor has to offer. Please note the heirlooms reflect both level 1 stats as well as stats for my character's current level, 83. As for prices on the items, don't get your hopes up -- as with everything on the beta, these are subject to change at any time.

Addon Spotlight: Equus Infinata

Addon Spotlight focuses on the backbone of the WoW gameplay experience: the user interface. Everything from bags to bars, buttons to DPS meters and beyond -- your addons folder will never be the same. This week, Addon Spotlight reaches into the addon grab bag and pulls out some delicious randomness for you.

Salutations, friends. Welcome to another exciting week on Addon Spotlight, where addons reign supreme amongst the pitiful, smelly masses of other crap you could talk about related to World of Warcraft. Addons encompass it all! We are champion.

This week, Addon Spotlight is heading into mount and pet territory, discussing a wonderful little addon called Equus Infinata. Equus not only caught my eye because of how simple and pretty the addon looks, but how it integrates straight into your already existing mount and pet interface pane. As a special treat, I asked Robert, the addon's author, a couple of questions about creating his first addon. Click for more!

World of WarCrafts: Critter Bites

World of WarCrafts spotlights art and creativity by WoW players, including fan art, cooking, comics, cosplay, music and fan fiction. Show us how you express yourself; email lisa@wow.com with your not-for-profit, WoW-inspired creations.

That's right, people, you read it here first: WoW.com is running articles on how to make your own pet food. The end days have arrived. If filler articles aren't your thing, scroll on by ... But if filler for your pets is where it's at, then you've come to the right place. While the pets shown here are neither rats nor turkeys (as recommended in the original recipe), we feel certain that common household critters such as dogs and cats will equally appreciate the merits of this delectable delight. But hey, if you prefer lobbing meat pellets at rats and turkeys in your living room (and then having them follow you around for three minutes) ... Well, to each his own. WoW.com would never judge you for your choices.

  • Matthew Rossi as Andrenorton, the troll mage; Michael Gray as Grayfields, the tauren hunter; Adam Holisky as Adammentat, the tauren druid; and Gregg Reece as Yakkowakko, the orc warlock, will be making appearances as they can.

For next week, are there any vanity pets you think our adventurers should farm for or otherwise try to acquire? Pair up vanity pets and a character (like Selfloathius, Annephora, Foxlight, etc.) in the comments and vote up your favorites. Next Friday, I'll put up a poll of the most popular choices.

Polls end Sunday and results will be up on Monday as usual.

If you want to join in on the fun of Choose My Adventure, please join us on Zangarmarsh (US-PVE-H) in <It came from the Blog>. Ask Robiness, Robinemia or any member online for an invite. Guild ranks of Lurker or above have the ability to invite. You are all welcome as long as you play by our simple rules, which can be summed up with "Don't be a Funsucker!" Also, please see the guild FAQ for the most common questions.

StarCraft II Collector’s Edition to include WoW vanity pet

Blizzard has just recently announced StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty's collector's edition. Normally this isn't something we would talk about here on WoW.com, but the contents make it worth mentioning. Specifically, WoW players will receive a Thor mini-pet, seen to the right. For those of you who don't follow StarCraft at all, the Thor is a new ubermech unit for the Terran faction. It's not only voice acted by Chris Metzen, but the pilot of the unit is based directly off him. One of his old aliases is Thundergod, after all. The Thor is big and it's bad-ass, and that's about all that you need to know. I wonder if it will interact with Grunty and the Zergling?

BigDownload has the full scoop on the contents of the collector's edition. There's great value there, even for people who don't play WoW. The collector's edition also includes a 2GB flash drive made to resemble Jimmy Raynor's dog tags, a 172-page art book, a behind the scenes DVD and more.

If you could have any animal as a pet, what pet would you want?

Filed under: Beast Mastery (BM), Commentary, Hunter News and Info, Opinion, Videos, brigwyn, hunter, hunter-pet, hunter-pets, pets, thl, warcraft, world of warcraft, wow — thlpodcast@brigwyn.com (Brigwyn and Daewin) @ 10:18 am

I’ve been giving some more thought to the whole question of pets lately.

Not the whole BM vs MM/SV pet thing.  And not the whole “Oooo!!! Shiny!” pet thing.  I mean what Blizzard has decided what was once our best friend, brother in arms and is now nothing more than a “Big Red DOT”

If that’s really the case, if pets are nothing more than just DPS or Tanking DOTS.  Then I gotta wonder.

What if we were like our Warlock buddy in the header image?  What if we could actually have any animal in the game become our Hunter Pet?

What!? Don’t look at me that way!  No, it’s not absurd!

Come on.. bear with me a moment and give it some serious thought?

If it’s as true as it seems and Ghostcrawler feels that pets aren’t that important(And it really does look like our  actions prove it.)  Well, why not open up all the different animal graphics to us and let them be pet.   At least this way our skins would be fun.

Me personally?  I would love to have a ROUS!  Anyway! What pet would you like to have in WoW?  Really!

(Oh! BTW – did you realize that little people were used to play the ROUS in Princess Bride? Hmm.. maybe that’s where Ghostcrawler got the idea!)

Patch 3.3.3: New pet bug on live realms

Patch 3.3.3 is live, and players all over are checking out all the new features -- I myself was busily exchanging battleground marks for honor points on all my various characters when I noticed something... odd. My level 70 pet had a new buff. Not just any buff -- Hellscream's Warsong, the buff from Icecrown Citadel. Upon further investigation, it appears that all player pets are currently running around with this buff -- demons, hunter pets and ghouls are all currently affected, although I didn't get a chance to peek at a mage water elemental. Alliance players are seeing the Alliance counterpart, Strength of Wrynn, also on all pets. While only the 5% version of the buff, players of every level are being affected -- I'm sure the level 42 hunter I saw running around with it was pleased. This is most assuredly a bug that will be fixed at some point in the near future, but pet classes? Enjoy it while you can. I know I will!

Scattered Shots: The right pet for the right situation

Welcome to Scattered Shots, written by Frostheim of Warcraft Hunters Union and the Hunting Party Podcast. Each week Frostheim uses logic and science mixed with a few mugs of Dwarven Stout to look deep into the Hunter class.

When you get down to the philosophical basics, every class has the same goal in a group or raid: do as much as you can to help clear the instance and kill the bosses. This of course is where the hunter obsession with DPS comes from. Most of the time the best thing we can do to help our group down bosses is to become a radiant beacon of death, to undergo an apotheosis into a DPS god and accept the adoration of the lesser DPS classes.

But there are times when it helps our group or raid more to sacrifice some of our personal DPS for the good of the group. Whether it's kiting blood beasts or blistering zombies or shooting down orbs, we are always happy and willing to take the hit for the good of the team. We're just noble that way.

And our noble pets can help out the team too, boosting the team's DPS as well as our own. Join me after the cut as we take a look when a different pet choice might be best thing for the team as a whole, even if it means a DPS loss for us personally.

Photo Contest reminder: Show us your plushies

The Spawn got her Wind Rider Cub on Friday and it has since been slept with, rained on and taken for a ride with Barbie. His name is now Lionel and he has become good friends with Murky the Murloc. Together they embark on great adventures and battle the nefarious deeds of the Darth Vader Happy Meal toy. (Don't get me started on the fact that McDonalds believes that Star Wars is for boys and iCarly is for girls. Seriously.)

Have you shown us your plushies yet? We have some really great entries already, but yours could be even better. You have until midnight, March 10th to send us your photos of your Plushie in the Wild and/or Plushie in Captivity. WoWTCGLoot.com has generously provided the loot codes for the prizes.

All of the contest details are after the break.
